Federal Reserve Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority cut borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline

Though BLS was set to release last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release once the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are going up, although gradually. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
