Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Displacement Confirmed

The island nation was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and displaced over a million residents.

Authorities stated that the powerful weather system triggered extensive flash flooding, coastal inundation, mudslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, leading to the relocation of millions of residents across the country.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams documented rising waters reaching the tops of houses and homes washed out by strong flows.

“Our personnel rescued 14 individuals who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official explained. “A father also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, officials announced two fatalities: a drowning victim on the island and another who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a severe tropical storm early Monday while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

According to meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is projected to continue weakening as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people with another 135 missing before moving on to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons were halted recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

Global warming is causing cyclones more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines this year.

Scientists have found that the frequency of super-typhoons striking the islands has risen by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

Global assessments suggest that severe weather events result in an average of US$3.5 million in damage for the Philippines annually.

The nation’s leader issued a state of emergency last week because of the severe damage caused by Kalmaegi and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
